The passing of Hazrat Shaykh Yusuf Motala (rahimahullah) is a profound loss for the Ummah and especially for British Muslims. A towering personality, a beacon of guidance, and a source of spiritual nourishment has departed from this world. We pray that Allah Almighty forgives Hazrat, grants him an abode in Jannatul Firdaws, accepts all his lifelong endeavours, and makes them a means of his eternal salvation. May Allah protect, preserve, and bless every institute he established, allowing them to continue serving the Deen with sincerity and excellence.
Hazrat Shaykh Yusuf Motala (rahimahullah) was an eminent scholar, a spiritual mentor, and a devoted servant of Islamic knowledge. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to the pursuit of sacred learning, the dissemination of Islamic teachings, and the spiritual upliftment of individuals. His deep mastery of Hadith, his emphasis on tazkiyah (purification of the heart), and his ability to illuminate hearts with the love of Allah SWT and His beloved Messenger Muhammad SAWS left an everlasting impact on all who benefited from his wisdom. As we remember his legacy, we honour his contributions to Islamic education, spiritual guidance, and community development. May Allah SWT bless his soul and grant him a lofty station… Aameen.
Hazrat Shaykh Yusuf Motala (1946–2019) was a pioneer of Islamic education in Britain. Born in India, he went on to establish the UK’s first Islamic seminary, Darul Uloom Al-Arabiyyah Al-Islamiyyah in Bury, which became a cornerstone of traditional Islamic scholarship in the West. Under his guidance, Maahadus Shuhada in Preston was founded as part of his vision to nurture future generations of scholars, preserve Islamic tradition, and serve the wider community with knowledge, spirituality, and integrity.
